I’ve always loved the medium of magazines. Vintage magazines from the early 1900’s as well as from the 1960’s and 1970’s have often found their way into my library and then eventually into photography and collage projects. I also did a series of double exposure images from 1990’s teen magazines.
I was exploring a few themes that were impacting my teenage self, including the harmful impact of the beauty industry, racial stereotypes, and ideas about “gender bending” (we have different, broader language around gender identity these days, of course), and aspects of sexuality. I labeled these in my loopy teenage handwriting with series titles including “The Imposition of Beauty” and “Beauty in a Bottle.”
