Kathryn Vercillo with crochet web art

Although I’ve earned my living as a writer and consider that my primary art form, I’ve always engaged with other kinds of art for healing, connecting to self and community, exploration and joy. Over the years, this has amounted to a larger body of work than I realized as I was making it, and I’ve begun to take that work more seriously in recent years (without letting seriousness erase any of the play!)

In 2024, the project I worked on most actively was In My Fluffy Pajamas: From Silk Road to San Francisco, a collaborative project with artist Badri Valian that combines co-storytelling with textile art, mapmaking, and sensory recall to assist participants with verbalizing and visualizing their narratives of immigration, displacement, relocation, resilience, and belonging.

I also took responsibility for coordinating the installation of the Northern California Liberty Crochet Mural, a collaborative crochet art exhibit for Women’s Reproductive Justice. I had crocheted one of the squares in the 40 square mural, assisted in stitching all of the squares together, and then took over the installation role from the previous coordinator.

The Liberty Crochet Mural was on display at The Drawing Room Annex in March 2024. I participated in a five-person panel discussion about Women’s Health and Reproductive Justice, bringing the lens of artist-activist to the space. We then moved the mural to The Women’s Building.
